(Spoiler: Kids who are sick need to eat and drink enough to keep their bodies hydrated and well-nourished, doctors say.)But in September, when President Donald Trump told pregnant women to “fight like hell not to take” Tylenol over unfounded claims it was linked to autism, the ongoing debate over what’s long been considered a standard of care for kids’ fevers bubbled up again. “A friend’s baby (7 months) was running a 101 fever on Friday night and she texted me, ‘of course now I’m scared to give him Tylenol,’” one Reddit user posted recently. A person identifying as a health care worker posted in a different Reddit thread last month that a patient “brought their infant in with 103 fever and said they were too afraid to give acetaminophen.”The president, who has no medical training, said multiple times that pregnant women and their children should “tough it out” instead of taking the pain reliever.Acetaminophen is the generic name for Tylenol and is an ingredient in a variety of medications. There is no credible data, experts say, showing the fever-reducer isn’t safe when it’s used correctly. The American Academy of Pediatrics wrote last week that studies don’t find a “causal link” between acetaminophen and autism in children or during pregnancy. “Misleading claims that the medicine is not safe and is linked to increased rates of autism send a confusing, dangerous message to parents and expectant parents,” the group wrote. What’s the point of a fever?When a new and potentially harmful germ invades our immune system, the body reacts by raising its core temperature. Viruses and bacteria tend not to thrive in warm environments.That’s not necessarily a bad thing — within reason, said Dr. Molly O’Shea, a pediatrician in Michigan and spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics.“Fever has value in fighting infection,” she said. “But there is a tipping point where that value is lost.”That’s when the child is so uncomfortable that they don’t want to eat or drink. “That’s when reducing the temperature makes sense,” she said. “More harm may come from dehydration.”Is a high fever always dangerous?When Seth Creech caught the flu during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, age 6 at the time, his fever soared to 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Seth’s father, Dr. Buddy Creech, a professor of pediatric diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, had a different view. “As a pediatrician, I knew that 106 wasn’t going to hurt him,” he said. “In a normal, healthy child, the body is really well calibrated to keep that temperature in a range that’s not going to be harmful to the child. That’s important for parents to realize.”What was concerning, Creech said, was how his son was acting while sick. “He looked terrible,” he said. “His eyes were glassy. He didn’t want to move.”Fever-reducing medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen brought Seth’s fever down to about 101 degrees. “He was totally fine at that point,” Creech said. “He was gold, playing Legos, video games.” Seth Creech recovered and is now a 22-year-old college senior.“If the child looks well and is feeling fine, is playful and is active, you really don’t have to do anything,” Buddy Creech said. “You can ride that out in part to see how they’re doing and to let the fever increase the pressure on the germ to die.”O’Shea supported the stance that a child’s behavior is key in determining how to react to high temperatures. Signs to treat fevers include being unusually sleepy, cranky and refusing food and drinks.Still, the AAP recommends calling the pediatrician for advice when a child’s fever reaches 104 degrees.The threshold for babies younger than 3 months old is much lower, according to the group, at 100.4 degrees.Creech said there’s no evidence that giving kids Tylenol or other medicines to ease their pain or fevers would prolong their illness.“Parents should feel very safe giving their kids Tylenol when they need it,” he said.Erika EdwardsErika Edwards is a health and medical news writer and reporter for NBC News and “TODAY.”

The price cuts come through the Medicare drug price negotiation program created under the Inflation Reduction Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law in 2022. It’s different from President Donald Trump’s “most favored nation” drug pricing approach, which relies on executive orders and voluntary deals with drugmakers — not legislation. Trump recently announced such a deal with Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy, to lower the price of the drugs in exchange for tariff relief.The Trump administration has been largely quiet about the Medicare price negotiation program.This is the second round of negotiations. Last year, the Biden administration reached deals on 10 prescription drugs, including several for heart disease and diabetes. Those price cuts are set to take effect in 2026. This latest round of price negotiations will go into effect in 2027.“President Trump directed us to stop at nothing to lower health care costs for the American people,” Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a news release. “As we work to Make America Healthy Again, we will use every tool at our disposal to deliver affordable health care to seniors.” Drugmakers can choose not to strike deals under the negotiation program, but doing so would most likely mean withdrawing their drugs from Medicare — cutting them off from one of the nation’s largest markets. Drugmakers have challenged the program in court but so far have been unsuccessful. The negotiated prices are what Medicare will pay drugmakers for the medicines, not what patients will pay out of pocket. Those discounts will save taxpayers $12 billion, according to CMS. It’s expected to save Medicare enrollees $685 million in out-of-pocket costs in 2027. Here are the negotiated prices for the drugs, based on a 30-day supply, compared to the 2024 list price:Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy, for Type 2 diabetes and weight loss: $274 negotiated price, down from the $959 list price. (Negotiated prices for higher doses of Wegovy are $385.)Trelegy Ellipta, an asthma treatment: $175, down from $654.Xtandi, for prostate cancer: $7,004, down from $13,480.Pomalyst, a chemotherapy drug: $8,650, down from $21,744.Ofev, for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: $6,350, down from $12,622.Ibrance, a breast cancer drug: $7,871, down from $15,741.Linzess, a chronic constipation drug: $136, down from $539.Calquence, a cancer drug: $8,600, down from $14,228.Austedo and Austedo XR, for Huntington’s disease: $4,093, down from $6,623.Breo Ellipta, a COPD drug: $67, down from $397.Xifaxan, for diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome: $1,000, down from $2,696.Vraylar, an antipsychotic drug: $770, down from $1,376.Tradjenta, a diabetes drug: $78, down from $488. Medicare Part D covers medications that people take at home, as opposed to those administered in a facility, such as IV chemotherapy. “The price negotiations look very reasonable to me,” said Stacie Dusetzina, a health policy professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. “It should hopefully provide some relief for taxpayers and beneficiaries in the long run.” Dusetzina said the $274 negotiated price for Ozempic and Wegovy is higher than the $250 price in Trump’s deal. “They should’ve gotten that deal for the taxpayers and the Medicare beneficiaries,” she said.The price cuts come as many Americans say the cost of prescription drugs is unaffordable.About 1 in 5 adults say they’ve skipped filling a prescription because it was too expensive, according to a survey published in July by health policy research group KFF. About 1 in 7 say they have cut pills in half or skipped doses of medicine in the last year because of the cost. Oct. 28, 2025, 6:28 AM EDT / Updated Oct. 28, 2025, 6:49 AM EDTBy Steve KopackAmazon said Tuesday that it plans to cut 14,000 corporate jobs, its biggest round of layoffs in years, as it invests more in artificial intelligence.In Amazon’s announcement, top human resources executive Beth Galetti cited AI, which she said the “most transformative technology we’ve seen since the internet.” She added that AI was “enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before.””We’re convicted that we need to be organized more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business,” Galetti continued.In June, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent employees at the company an email with the subject line “Some thoughts on Generative AI.” In it, Jassy signaled that Amazon’s workforce would likely shrink in the future.”We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing and more people doing other types of jobs,” he wrote.Jassy continued, “It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.”The job cuts at Amazon come amid a wave of layoffs at other tech and retail firms. Target said last week it would cut 1,000 corporate office jobs and close 800 open roles. Meta Platforms, owner of Instagram and Facebook, also cut 600 jobs on Wednesday and Microsoft began eliminating 9,000 jobs in July.Paramount Skydance, which competes with Amazon in streaming and for sports rights, also plans to cut 2,000 workers this week, Reuters reported. Salesforce reduced its workforce by 4,000 employees in September, citing “the benefits and efficiencies” of AI.But AI is not just impacting hiring in the media and technology sectors. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon told employees in recent weeks that the Wall Street lender would “constrain headcount growth through the end of the year” and cut a limited amount of jobs due to efficiencies gained through the use of AI tools.Amazon had 1.55 million employees worldwide at the end of the second quarter, which ended on June 30, according to a filing. About 350,000 of those work in corporate offices, Reuters reported.The tech giant said it would give employees whose roles are eliminated Tuesday “90 days to look for a new role internally,” with recruiters prioritizing internal candidates “to help as many people as possible find new roles within Amazon.”Amazon has in recent years also ordered corporate employees back into the office and asked them to move closer to the physical office locations where they are based. Workers were told in June to relocate to Amazon hubs such as Seattle and the Virginia area, Bloomberg News reported. Those locations are where two of Amazon’s regional headquarters are located.Amazon is set to announce its third quarter earnings on Thursday. Wall Street analysts expect the company, which currently has a market value of more than $2.4 trillion, to report revenue of more than $170 billion.Tuesday’s cuts may only be the beginning.
